Holmwood to Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge

Address:
209 Nature Road Lake Arthur, LA 70549

At Holmwood, coming up, you can choose to drive east on Hwy 14 to visit the 35,000 acre Lacassine Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is home to great bass fishing in an impoundment known as "The Pool." "Florida bass" weighing in excess of 10 pounds are caught here regularly. One of Louisiana's nesting colonies of the stunning roseate spoonbill is found here as well as the largest tracts of cypress swamp to be found along the Creole Nature Trail. To visit the impoundment area, go east on Hwy 14 to Hayes. Then drive east 3 miles to Illinois Plant Road and take Illinois Plant Road south 4.5 miles. There you will find a wildlife observation drive and boat ramps. To visit the headquarters area and take advantage of a wildlife viewing tower, hiking trail, and bank fishing opportunities, continue east on Hwy. 14 to LA 3056, then go south, veering right on Streeter Road. Along the way, watch for large numbers of shorebirds and waterfowl feeding in the surrounding rice fields.
